Frequently-Asked Questions

We get asked a number of questions about the materials supplied by Farmhall Aviation Training. Here are the answers to some of them. If your question is not listed here, then please click on the "Contact Us" tab at the top right-hand corner of the screen and ask us directly.

  1. Are the materials meant to replace the books of examination questions that one can buy from Aerotraining, Aviation Publishers and other sources?

No. Those online examinations or books of questions are an essential part of preparing to take the Transport Canada examination. The materials from Farmhall Aviation Training, while focused firmly on the Transport Canada syllabus, are more general. The texts go beyond what is strictly needed for the Transport Canada examinations and are designed to make you a rounded and knowledgeable pilot. The questions are generally not multiple choice as they are on an examination—they are open-ended and designed to stimulate discussion and thought.

  2. Are the materials kept up-to-date?

Yes. Keeping the materials up-to-date is essential: everything to do with aviation is continually changing. Regulations change, airspaces change, instrument approaches change. Farmhall Aviation Training presenters deliver the courses several times each year, and this allows them to keep the course material continuously refreshed. To ensure that only the very latest versions are shipped, the workbooks are printed on demand using the latest printing technology. This means that there is no warehouse full of slightly out-of-date books that has to be cleared before fresh copies can be made available—every copy shipped represents the latest edition.

  3. Does printing on demand rather than shipping from inventory slow down the ordering process?

No. The latest print-on-demand technology can produce hundreds of workbooks an hour. The delay between an order being received and the product being shipped is generally less than 24 hours.

  4. Do the materials cover the Transport Canada syllabus?

Yes. Generally, the workbooks arrange the topics in the precise order given in the Transport Canada syllabus. In some cases, to improve the flow of the text, sections are re-arranged slightly but all topics are still covered. Additional information, not explicitly required by the syllabus, is often added to augment the Transport Canada topics. This occurs, for example, in the Theory of Flight workbook where some basic physics is covered before the forces acting on an aircraft are described. In general, every topic is covered in much greater depth than is required to pass the Transport Canada written examination—the aim of Farmhall Aviation Training is to help students become knowledgeable pilots as well as pass the written examination. Many of the worked examples in the text are more sophisticated than would be required for the written examination but these are clearly annotated and can be skipped by students if necessary.

  5. What extra materials are needed to use the resources from Farmhall Aviation Training?

For the Commerical Pilot and the Instrument course, students need access to a recent Canada Flight Supplement (CFS), a Toronto VNC chart, a LO5/6 LO-altitude en route chart and some form of aviation calculator such as an ASA CX-2. An analogue E6B sliderule is strongly not recommended. In addition, those studying the Instrument course require the Ontario section of the Canada Air Pilot and the Canada Air Pilot general pages. All of these are available from any Canadian aviation supplier such as Pilot Supply Canada or VIP Pilot.

  6. Can I get a sample copy of one of the workbooks to decide whether it is suitable for me?

Yes. Sample pages are directly available from here. If these are insufficient for you to get a feel for the workbooks then use the Contact page to request a sample.

  7. The workbooks and other tools prepared by Farmhall Aviation Training are geared towards the Commercial Pilot Licence and the IFR Rating. Is there any intention to issue similar workbooks for the Private Pilot Licence?

There is no current intention to produce these (although many of the Commercial Pilot Workbooks would be suitable for an advanced or ambitious student working for a Private Pilot Licence or Recreational Permit). If you think that such workbooks would be useful to you, please supply that feedback using the Contact page.

  8. The workbooks prepared by Farmhall Aviation Training are made available in printed (paper) format. Can I get a soft copy (e.g., as a pdf)?

Yes, each workbook can be purchased as a paperback book or downloaded as a pdf file. Note that the pdf does not contain the covers that are present on the printed version..

  9. May I make copies of a workbook for other people in my groundschool class?

No. The workbooks, whether purchased as paperback books or as a downloaded pdf file are copyrighted. You may print the pdf file for your own use but you may not give copies to anyone else. Nor may you photocopy the paperback book.
